PPSR

A better chance of recovering debt with PPSR

The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is a centralised electronic register that records security interests and agreements relating to personal property. You can search and register security interests through our PPSR portal.

Prior to granting credit, use the PPSR to do a search on a debtor to find out if there are any existing security interests over their collateral. This may mean they have several existing debts. You can also search a debtor to find out if the collateral they are offering you as security has been used as security for another party. If so, someone else will have priority over this collateral.

It’s also possible to register a financing statement on the PPSR. Registering your security interest on the PPSR may give you a better chance of recovering a debt if your debtor defaults. The Personal Property Securities Act 1999 contains rules for determining priority between security interests in the same collateral, so it’s important to register your security interests as soon as possible. If you don’t register your security interests and a debtor becomes bankrupt or is placed into liquidation, secured creditors will be ahead of you when payments are made, or assets distributed.
